Description - The PzKpfw II (Panzerkampfwagen II) was a German light tank of World War II. The first prototypes of the vehicle were built in 1934, and series production continued between 1935 and 1944, ending with the production of around 1,850 vehicles. The A version of the tank was powered by a single 130hp Maybach HL 57 TR engine. Its armament consisted of 1 KwK 30 calibre 20 mm cannon and 1 MG 34 calibre 7.92 mm machine gun located in the turret. The PzKpfw II was developed as a result of a competition announced by the German Bureau of Armaments for a light tank weighing up to 10 tonnes armed with a 20 mm cannon. The said competition was won by MAN, in cooperation with Daimler-Benz. Series production began in 1935, and numerous variants of the PzKpfw II tank were developed. Chronologically, the first was the A version, which was, however, produced in relatively small numbers. Shortly afterwards, the B version was created, which already had a new, more powerful engine and a modified chassis. Already in 1937, the C version was developed, which had a fundamentally changed undercarriage and the frontal armour of the fuselage was reinforced. At the end of 1940, the F version was developed, which had stronger armour and a better gearbox compared to the C version. In 1942, production of the L (Luchs) version began, which had a completely new chassis, a new 180 hp engine and a significant increase in maximum speed from 40 km/h to 60 km/h. Numerous other vehicles were also developed on the PzKpfw II tank chassis, such as the Wespe self-propelled howitzer and the Marder II tank destroyer. PzKpfw II tanks were used on almost all fronts of the Second World War, with the PzKpfw II being assigned to secondary tasks from 1942 onwards.
